What kind of professionals should provide rehabilitation care?
Comprehensive rehabilitation care requires both extensive knowledge of therapy techniques and animal anatomy, physiology and disease processes. Veterinarians with rehabilitation training are ideally suited to treat your dog in the context of the whole animal, especially in older animals that often have multiple issues. Physical therapists who have received additional training in animal anatomy and disease processes are also well suited but must practice in conjunction with a veterinarian who must provide a diagnosis.
Rehabilitation
The goal of rehabilitation therapy is to create a return to optimal function after surgery, injury, chronic illness or degenerative disease. Rehab therapy can correct and prevent some of the movement problems seen after injuries, as well as correct muscular imbalances which lead to discomfort in diseases such as hip dysplasia. At MVRS, each program is individualized and can consist of prescribed exercise programs, conditioning, weight management, hot and cold therapy, massage, ultrasound therapy and neuromuscular electrostimulation therapy. Dr. Jarvis also has a special interest in chronic pain management and will use a combination of rehabilitation techniques and medication to help your pet achieve a good quality of life.
