Internships for Veterinary Nurse-Technicians
Because technicians are such an important part of our practice, we are committed to helping advance their clinical training through our internship program. We offer specialized training for graduating veterinary technology students from several local programs. At Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services you will learn to hone your clinical nursing skills and patient monitoring with our busy 24 hour intensive care unit. You will utilize your technical skills to prepare patients for our team of board-certified surgeons and you will learn how to support our internal medicine staff while performing complex endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. You will gain valuable knowledge and experience in client relations and hands on training. You will see a wide variety of cases and gain experience that will help you as you move into the exciting field of veterinary technology.
Internship (work experience) is a very important phase of practical training for students enrolled in the veterinary technology program. It generally follows the final semester of class work, our internship program is a 12 week program so that you can get the most out of what our hospital has to offer. Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services, Ltd. offers internships to students to enhance the students educational experience and expose them to an internal medicine and emergency medicine environment. MVRS offers training and experience in a state-of-the-art modern facility utilizing digital imaging, ultrasound, endoscopy, and fluoroscopy. Areas that will be covered include, but are not limited to:
- Animal Restraint Techniques
- Animal Nutrition
- Medical Nursing
- Animal Care and Management
- Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases
- Veterinary Workplace Safety
- Veterinary Pharmacology
- Laboratory Techniques
Students will be under the direct supervision of certified veterinary technicians and licensed veterinarians.

These internships do fill quickly, please be prepared to submit your resume and do an on-site interview. We require a 12 week internship so you get the most hands on training experience we feel you deserve. A recommendation from your program supervisor is also a requirement with your application.
Externships for Veterinary Students
Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services provides clinical externship opportunities for veterinary students.

Here is your opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience with the supervision of a Board-Certified internal medicine specialist, emergency veterinarians and a highly skilled technical staff. Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services is pleased to offer openings for our externship program to any veterinary student who is interested. Please call the Practice Administrator for more information about availability of times to schedule your visit to our practice.
With the guidance of our experienced staff, an intern will experience the advanced skills required to be successful in the practice of specialty medicine. You will participate in performing video endoscopy, ultrasonography with guided biopsies and aspirates as well as laparoscopy. You will experience emergency medicine, emergency surgery, critical care, and see how to manage multiple diverse cases while learning how to make good decisions in a fast paced environment.
You will also have access to a full diagnostic laboratory with rapid turn-around times; perform digital radiography, fluoroscopy and abdominal ultrasound to help you make good decisions for your patients.
Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Services, Ltd. offers 4th year veterinary students two-week externships in the emergency / critical care department. Students will have a hands-on experience dealing with a varied and interesting caseload in a fast-paced, state-of-the-art facility. Areas that will be covered include, but are not limited to:
- Triage on All Incoming Patients
- Obtaining Medical Histories
- Physical Examinations (including orthopedic / neurologic when applicable)
- Develop Treatment Plans
- Perform Minor Procedures
- Scrub in for Surgery
- Perform Phlebotomy
- IV Catheter Placement
- Reviewing Typical Cases
Students will be under the direct supervision of certified veterinary technicians and licensed veterinarians.
